Instagram Reels Views vs Story Views: Which One Helps Your Reach in 2026?
Since August 2024, "views" has been Instagram's main number for every format, from Reels and Stories to photos and carousels. So creators keep asking the same question: which views matter more, Reels views or Story views?
The answer comes straight from how Instagram builds each feed. Reels and Stories reach different people, are ranked on different signals and show their numbers to different audiences. Once you see that, the choice is simple.
The Short Answer
Reels views help you reach new people. Instagram shows Reels mostly to accounts that do not follow you yet.
Story views help you keep the people you already have. Instagram builds Stories only from accounts a person follows.
If you want growth, focus on Reels. If you want loyal followers who buy from you, use Stories to stay in touch.
How Reels Views Work
Who sees your Reels
Instagram says the Reels feed works much like Explore. It fills mostly with Reels from accounts the viewer does not follow, picked from what they have enjoyed before. That makes Reels the main way strangers discover you.
What Instagram measures
For each Reel, Instagram predicts how likely a viewer is to:
Reshare it with friends
Watch it all the way through
Like it
Open its audio page
A view only counts that the Reel appeared or started playing. Shares and completed watches are what push a Reel to bigger audiences. Our guide to the latest Instagram algorithm update covers these signals in more detail.
Who can see the count
Reel view counts appear on the Reels tab of your profile, where anyone can see them. Instagram also lets creators hide view counts in their settings. Because the number is public, Reels views also work as social proof.
How Story Views Work
Only followers see your Stories
Instagram builds the Stories tray only from accounts a person follows. Your Stories almost never reach strangers. They are a tool for keeping in touch, not for being discovered.
What Instagram measures
Instagram orders Stories using each viewer's history with you: how often they watch your Stories, how often they react or reply, and how close you are. It predicts whether they will tap in, reply or skip ahead.
Who can see the count
Only you can see who viewed your Story, by swiping up on it. Other people never see your Story view count. Stories also disappear after 24 hours unless you save them to Highlights.
Reels Views vs Story Views at a Glance
Which One Boosts the Algorithm More?
Neither number works on its own. Instagram decides how far a Reel travels by predicting whether real viewers will watch, share and like it. A view count without those actions does not tell Instagram the Reel is good.
That said, Reels are the only one of the two that can reach new people at all. A strong Reel can travel far beyond your followers. A strong Story stays inside your follower base.
So for reach, Reels win. For keeping followers engaged, Stories win. The smartest accounts use both: Reels to bring people in and Stories to keep them close.
Should You Ever Pay for Views?
Reels views: a small boost for social proof
Because Reel view counts are public, extra views can make a new Reel look less empty to the first real visitors. On our panel, video views that work with Reel links start at about ₹0.57 per 1,000, and faster worldwide views cost about ₹37 per 1,000.
Paid views will not make a weak Reel go viral. Use them only on Reels that are already good, and add real effort to get shares. Our breakdown of real vs fake engagement explains the difference.
Story views: rarely worth it
Story view counts are private, so they add no social proof. They also do not help you reach new people. The only real reason to buy them is to show a brand a screenshot, and brands can simply ask for your insights instead.
If you want to spend on Instagram, put the money into Reels views, saves or likes instead. On our panel, saves start at about ₹2.50 per 1,000. You can see current rates on our Instagram SMM panel.

How to Get More Real Reels Views
Post original content. Instagram recommends only the original when two posts are the same.
Avoid things Instagram shows less. That includes watermarks, low resolution, borders and Reels that are mostly text.
Test with Trial Reels. They go to non-followers first, and you see results after about 24 hours.
Make Reels worth sharing. Quick tips, local guides and relatable moments get sent to friends.
Use longer Reels when it helps. Reels can now be up to three minutes, which suits tutorials.

How to Get More Real Story Views
Post Stories most days. Instagram ranks Stories partly on how often people watch yours, so regular posting keeps you near the front.
Ask for replies. Polls, quizzes and question stickers give people an easy reason to tap.
Reply to every response. Each conversation brings you closer to that follower, which helps your next Story.
Share your Reels to Stories. This sends your followers to your newest Reel.
Save your best Stories to Highlights. New visitors can see them after the 24 hours end.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do Story views help you get more followers?
Not directly. Stories are shown only to people who already follow you. They help you keep followers engaged, which can lead to more shares of your Reels.
Can other people see my Story views?
No. Only you can see who viewed your Story. Reels view counts, on the other hand, appear on your Reels tab unless you hide them.
Are Reels views more valuable than likes?
They measure different things. Views show how often a Reel was seen, while likes, shares and saves show what people thought of it. Instagram uses those reactions to decide how far a Reel travels.
Is it safe to buy Reels views?
Instagram can remove inauthentic activity, so no paid service is risk-free. Use a trusted SMM panel in India, start small and focus on making Reels people want to share.
